Hiigaran Corvettes: Gunship - Anti Fighter Pulsar - Anti Corvette/Platform, Okay against fighters, Bad vs Subsystems Minelayer - Very weak anti fighter gun. Anti-Frigate/Capitol Mines Minegun - Strong Guns. Anti-Fighter/Corvette Mines. Khopesh - Multi-Gun Corvette, ANTI Fighter/Corvette/Frigates
Vagyr Corvettes: Missile - Slow Firing, Anti any small craft, and even dent frigates in #s. VERY Anti Platform (double damage) Laser - Anti Frigate/Capital. Slow firing, terrible vs Subsystems/Platforms. Minelayer - Same as Hiigaran Command - Flying Firecontrol tower (stacks with others). Upgrades unit AI combat behavior in its radius. Single ship however. Multilance - More info needed Storm - More info needed

For Hiigaran I really like the Minelayer and Minegun...those are really the only ones that I consider worth it. The gunships is too slow and expinsive for as easy as it is to kill.

Have you tested to see if the different mines from the Minegun vs Ming Layer have a seperate 'count'? Or can you only have 100 total mines, between the two?

Hilgaran: If you're playing a defensive game, then the vettes can really be worth it; the reason being that they will tend to stay close to the mom. I don't really like the idea behind the minegun simply because your mom should be able to handle small ships. I still have yet to actually play with it though. The minelayer on the other hand is quite nice. Again, it does really destroy ships unless several mines hit at once, but it's a very nice 'softener.' I think of the mine vettes as free damage, since it's not costing you any ship loss.
Gunshsips: They aren't bad for what you get, but they are definitely a unit that only makes it's way onto the field during the early game. I've found that they are only good against fighters, but they will take fighters down fairly quickly.
Pulsar: I think this unit is fairly good. Again, I'm looking at it as an early ship (and not for late game). It murders frigates at a serial killer speed (heh). I can't remember how it fairs against vettes. In groups of 10+ it does very well against capitals; but I tend to stay away from using small ships as anti-capital defense, because of the explosion factor. In order to make this tactic work, you must accompany the small ships with at least a few frigates or a destroyer. Then, when the capital ship is about to explode, you send your small ships away and let the frigs or destroyer finish the capital off.
Kopesh: No exp. w/ this unit.
Vagyr: Theri vettes are beyond a shadow of a doubt, worth it. The storm vette is just as fast as the hilgaran intercepter (base speed). Since Vagry have all their research options opened up very early, I like using the best possible vehicles from the beginning of the game. Well, not entirely so, usually I build a few missile vettes to manage other vettes and frigs. Once my money situation is under control I go straight for storm vettes and sometimes the multi-lance. The later is really good if your opponent is completely ignoring small ship defense.
Missile: Good for the early game (very early) just as a small buffer against incoming vettes and frigs.
Laser: I skip this unit and go straight to the multilance (assuming I'm using vettes for this role; usually I don't use many).
Command: Yes, very good. Take 2-4 for each of your ship groups. They really do make a difference, so long as your opponent doesn't take them out.
Multilance: Not much experience with this ship. Yesterday against Ty, I sent 4 of these pups against two of his missile frigs, and I lost all 4 and did virtually no damage. They don't seem very good against frigs, which is a shame, since they one of the top tier ships.
Storm: Excellent against fighters, not sure against vettes. Probably the best small ship in the game for managing other small ships.

I use the minegun vett with hiigaran as my end game unit to escort my destroyers and take care of enemy fighters that get too close. And to ensure that the enemy's mine field (if they use it) dosn't destroy me.

I've been recently dabbling with using Kopesh (old Multigun Corvette from earlier editions) in drawn out games.
Think of it as a mine-gun corvette that also is good against frigates. Slightly more expensive, but worth it once you get to it. I still build mineguns in the intermediary period (including the minelaying upgrade).
