Do we want to have a common costume theme like "night of the living dead", "classic horror films", or "pimps and hoes" (difficult for singles)? Or do we just want to say everyone come as whatever they want?
Also do we want to have a best costume or worst costume contest? Along those lines, do we want to have an entrance fee... winner takes all.

I definatly like the idea of a theme, though even with out it would be completely fun, and might leave others to more freedom of design. Either way has its advantages/disadvantages.
I dunno about a entrance fee. That'd be nice for the winner, but those who only half-assed their costume, or didn't want to wear a costume, or didn't have the time or whatever to make a good costume won't really want to put money in. I dunno. Maybe I can make a nice leather mask as item to the winner. Or something like that.

I don't like the idea of a cover charge either. It discourages people away on principle. If we need money for the food and drinks, then we could always make it 'pot-luck' style.
As for the theme, I've always liked the idea, but if we decide to go this route, then it should be general enough so as to allow those people who don't really like to buy a new costume each year to simply use what they had from the previous years. Ideally, it would be great for everyone to come in a smashing costume each year, but honestly, I'd rather just have everyone together.

First, on the "cover fee". I did not mean a cover or entrance fee for teh party. I meant that anyone wanting to participate in teh costume contest itself pay a small entrance fee to the contest to be able to compete. If you don't want to compete, you don't pay. However, if this is an issue, it can be dropped. I'm just trying to throw out some ideas.
As for the theme, I would like to keep it simple so that everyone has a lot of freedom. Also, the theme would not be a requirement, but it is always fun to see different takes on the same idea. For example: the classic horror idea. Depending on your idea of classic horror, someone might come in a hockey mask (Jason - more modern) or they might come as the wolfman. They might be a mummy, dracula, the swamp thing, or any number of classic horror characters. They could look like the original 1930's to 1940's characters or a more modern incarnation. The theme is there, but the orignality and diversity is available to have a simple costume or a very complex one. Another aspect of this is how it can tie into the "killer" theme. Based on the claw wounds, is the wolfman or Freddie Kreuger the killer or did the axemurder set them both up??
Likewise with the other themes. You can see where I am going with all of this. Also, these are not the only ideas. If you guys have a good idea for this, then throw it out on the table, just keep it simple.
Also, I agree with Garrett. The whole idea is to get together, not to have stunning costumes. However, it is fun to flex the creative muscles and to see what others come up with. However none of this is ever "required". If someone comes in blue jeans and a T-shirt, I hope they have just as much fun.

Another theme that gives lots of leeway in what you want to come as and can be more easily judged in a contest would be the “Dead Man” theme. Basically everyone must come as something dead. Take Dead to mean what ever you want, from skeleton, to dinosaur, disco, Elvis, to a kid sneaking out of his room and getting caught by his parents when he is grounded for drinking and knows that his parents will kill him if he got caught.
Be as creative as you can….

This is from Susan. I like the classic horror theme. There are a lot of ways you can go with that.
