As tradition dictates… We will be doing the dice game again this year.
Everyone should bring 2 - 3 gifts at @ $5 each not to exceed $30 total (that could mean $20 - 30 for a couple if they both play seperately). I would also encourage everyone to pick up one fun or "gag" gift that is fairly cheap (if we do the Nightmare Before New Year’s Day theme, there could be a lot of fun gifts).
For those who don't know, here are the rules of the dice game:
1) Everyone brings 2 - 3 wrapped gifts. These can be serious gifts, funny gifts, or cool gifts, but should be something someone might want to take home.
2) Everyone sits in a circle with the gifts in the center.
3) A tray is passed around the circle with a set of dice. Each person rolls the dice once.
~ When doubles are rolled that person chooses a gift from the center or another player, but does not open it, and rolls again.
~ You are not allowed to steal someone's last gift.
4) This continues until all of the gifts in the center are gone. A timer is set to designate the end of the game.
5) There are usually several pairs of dice going at once, so to keep the game moving, don’t choose a gift(s) until you have passed the dice to the next person.
6) When the timer goes off, the dice stop, and the gifts are opened. (You can trade with anyone you want.)
Keep in mind that choosing a gift is usually based on packaging. What it looks like (odd shapes, colors, packaging, etc) as well as how it sounds and feels, so be creative when wrapping or otherwise packaging your gifts. As they are not opened until the game is over, the coolest gifts get stolen the most often!
Also, start looking now. Sometimes you can find good deals and bargains on some cool stuff long before the holiday shopping season gets here. (Again, if we go with the nightmare theme, right now is a great time to pick up some cheap Halloween left overs).
Finally, it is usually easier to spend $5 each month for 3 months, than to pull $15 - $20 out of your already tight christmas budget...
