Laws of the Forum SPQR
I. There is a great conspiracy afoot, but not everyone shares the same goals. Some conspire to have Nero killed, others seek to discover the conspirators. Some wish to remain neutral, while others may look to bring down a rival. What ever your motive for the evening, try to play your role as your character would think and act. More importantly, just have fun!
II. Follow your motivation. Even if you are not a conspirator, you still do not like Nero for whatever reason. While you may not be plotting to kill him, you should still show your dislike for him.
III. Conspirator Cards ¡V Every guest will draw a card that defines their role in the conspiracy as well as any resources you have for the game. There will only be 3 ¡V 5 conspirators with the rest playing guests. There is also an infiltrator to the conspiracy that is working for Nero to uncover the remaining conspirators. If he/she discovers a conspirator, it is likely they will be arrested at the end of the night as long as the infiltrator remains alive to report them. Play your role well to make the game more enjoyable for all.
IV. Resources ¡V Some Conspirator Cards will allow certain resources available for the player to use. The majority of cards do not provide any resources, and not only the conspirators gain resources. The rules for each resource are listed below:
ƒ¾ Bribes ¡V Some characters have enough wealth that they can attempt to bribe others. Each coin is worth a year¡¦s wages for the common man, so a single coin is an adequate bribe to convince most people to do what you want. If you accept a bribe, you are free to spend it to bribe someone else if you wish. There are a set number of coins, so no outside coins allowed. ƒ¾ Favors ¡V Some characters have enough influence to be able to call in a favor. Each favor will be represented by a ticket wish is to be torn and given to the recipient when used. Each favor can only be used once. If you are given a favor ticket, you must do what the person giving it to you asks (within reason). Favors can only be used of game related issues. ƒ¾ Poison ¡V Some characters will come prepared to deal death and will have access to poison. Poison is represented by lemon juice. A person using poison must use enough lemon juice so that the recipient can taste it. If you taste lemons, then you are poisoned and will die at the end of the game. Your character does not know they will die, but may begin to feel sick as the night progresses. If you are caught using poison, you will be arrested (and thus effectively out of the game). ƒ¾ Recruit Card ¡V If you are given a recruit card, you are now part of the conspiracy. Take the card and keep it until the end of the game (you cannot give it away). As a recruit, you will attempt to assist your recruiter when asked, but may not know you are conspiring against Nero, and thus not a full conspirator. For the most part, if you are recruited, you will continue to act as if your recruiter has called in a favor. ƒ¾ Killer Card ¡V If you are shown the killer card, then you are dead (and thus effectively out of the game). The killer must describe how they are killing their victim. There are a very limited number of killer cards in the game and only a character with a killer card can kill another player (with the exception of poison above). If you are caught killing another player, you will be arrested (and thus effectively out of the game).
V. Death ¡V The objective of this game is not to survive, but rather to meet your objective (remain undiscovered as a conspirator, find the conspirators, etc). However, death is quite possible. There are two ways to die as outlined above. No one can cheat death, so if you taste poison or are killed, then take your death as part of the game. It falls on the victim to determine if they are dead. ƒ¾ Poison ¡V Death by poison allows you to continue to play your character. You should get progressively weaker through the night. At the end of the game before the trial, you will die. As you will be dead, you will not be able to testify at the trial. ƒ¾ Killer Card ¡V Being killed removes your from the game. You can continue to interact, but should avoid divulging any information or otherwise affecting the outcome of the game. You can no longer use any of your resources. For the rest of the game, you are effectively a lesser politician who showed up late to the feast and has no real power, wealth, or opinion about what is going on with the conspiracy. ƒ¾ Arrested ¡V If you are arrested, you are executed the following morning and should follow the same rules as if you had been killed with the Killer Card.
VI. The Trial ¡V At the end of the night a trial will be held to attempt to uncover the conspirators. Anyone who is poisoned will die (have fun and put on a show!) before the trial begins. Everyone left alive will be allowed to testify as to who they believe the conspirators are. Once everyone who wishes to speak has said what they want, a vote will be taken by ballots filled out and turned in. Once the ballots are collected, the conspirators with the most votes will be arrested to be executed the following morning. VII. Victory! ¡V While the object is to play and have fun, several people will be recognized for their prowess. Some of the victors will be: ƒt Escaped Conspirators ¡V Any conspirators who escaped the trial alive obviously did well and should be recognized. ƒt Perfect Investigators ¡V Anyone who can uncover all of the conspirators must have a sharp eye and keen judge of character and should be recognized. ƒt Deep Pockets ¡V Whoever has the most bribe money at the end of the night has obviously earned some recognition.
