Have you all ever thought about making your own game? I was thinking how fun it would be to create our own RPG MUD. Lots of really creative minds here. I have some ideas...anyone interested in having a discussion about it?

I know nothing in the coding department:/ Sad.
Idea wise though, absolutely:)
First Question... Classic RPG (IE, fantasy, typical classic races and classes...think FF1)... or something that tries to be different out the gate (games that are still fantasy rpg, but diverge into things like sword/guns, wierd races, various not-traditional-fantasy elements)
Good points to both really:) (also, I've never really done any MUD'ing, though I know a little about the genre. Maybe race/classes don't matter, and its just the world that matters? IE, if everyone starts the same?....how does a MUD work usually?)

*bashful look* I, um... used to code for text based MUSHes back in the mid 90's.

Ha!
Awesome. Just what I wanted to read, Kitra. Of course, a lot has changed in the programming world since then..I'm sure you know. LUA is fantastic when coupled with C++. Adding new dungeons and items is made easy with LUA.
Anyway, Chad if you ever wanted to look into what a MUD is, just google MUD games and you'll find plenty to read. It looks interesting...something I think this group of friends could come up with something fun to work on, if anyone's interested.
MUD games have evolved into what you play now, WoW. MUD is usually text-based and have an extensive list of text commands to send to the server.
I have many ideas and not many people to share them with.

I've been wanting to write large multi-player worlds since about 1988. But I ended up getting into business programming for a living. While I'm sure I can contribute to game logic, I know I also have us covered if player characters have a desire to purchase, warehouse, sell, and invoice inventory. ;D Also I suspect the player characters will be well versed in insurance and document printing. ) In any case, I tend to write solid code, and this sounds like fun.

Would be interesting to see what kind of things we can come up with...would be for fun of course. If we set out to do this for money...chances are we'll hate it...and lose interest.
I have a small background in C++, an extensive history in Visual Basic...and going to college to get my Bachelor's Degree in Programming/Developing. I love to code!
If you have ideas on another project, let's hear it. I'd love to be involved in at the very least, a coding project on a multi-user sort of level. No matter the platform or difficulty. Any experience is good for me.
I have so many ideas...my latest is a Gauntlet-style top-down game..that incorporates some Left 4 Dead, Gauntlet, WoW and some of my original ideas.
I'd love for you Ty or Chad or whoever to come over to my house to see Left 4 Dead...awesome game.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your original intent. Isn't a MUD a multi user game?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your original intent. Isn't a MUD a multi user game? Yes, you have that right. MUD = Multi-User Dungeon. Normally, these are text-only online games where people can interact with each other with a chat-feature. There are monsters to kill, quests to complete, very similar to World of Warcraft, Warhammer, or really any other MMORPG game currently available. While my initial idea is a MUD...I wouldn't mind expanding it a bit to include a GUI and become more user-friendly than that of text commands typed by the player. Mike, if you are confused by my other comments...I was just saying that I have other ideas that I'd like to learn from. I have read and completed so many tutorials, that I know "how" to create a top-down Gauntlet-style game...but, would actually like to commit my time to doing so. I love creating things with code!

LOL... well, I'm up for raiding the Beyer house for a night and discussing this further. I took a year of Computer programming in college, but barely remember the basics of C++. Even so I would be interested in the conceptual part of it. Now we just need to set a day when we have free to come check out Left 4 Dead and start getting some ideas down.
BTW, how goes the internet problems?

This all sounds pretty cool. I have some experience with Java and .net(vb7).
